Can you remember the last time you made a New Year’s Resolution and stuck to it? Most New Year’s resolutions are way too broad and are forgotten by January 3rd. This year, we want to help you stick to your resolution. Whether it’s to step out of your comfort zone, try something new, or even something as crazy as changing someone’s life, we have the perfect thing to fulfill all three of those seemingly impossible resolutions—resource parenting! Here are 5 reasons why you should consider becoming a resource parent in 2020!
1.There are More Children in Foster Care Than you Think
As of 2017, there are almost 450,000 children in foster care. Those children need dedicating and loving resource families to take care of them while their biological parents are unable to do so.
2. You are Ready to Make a Difference
Becoming a resource parent is a big decision, but it makes an even bigger impact on the community around you. If you realize that resource parenting is for you, you can make a difference for not just one child, but for every child, you bring into your home. Even if you foster only one child, you make a difference in their life, the lives of their biological family, and the lives of every person who comes into that child’s life in the future. A positive impact makes a bigger difference than you may think.
3. You’re Suffering from ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’
Maybe all of your children have graduated and moved out, or maybe they’re even starting families of their own! Regardless of the various life stages, your biological children may be in, suddenly having no kids in your house can be a huge change for some families. If you’re in this predicament, you should consider resource parenting! With the experience of raising a child already under your belt and an empty room just waiting to be filled, resource parenting could be exactly the thing to keep you fulfilled and creating new experiences!
4. You Need a New Adventure
Resource parenting can be many things to many different people, but it most definitely is an adventure! It is also everything that comes along with a new adventure—exciting, rewarding, and a little scary at times! Just like raising your own children, becoming a resource parent takes dedication, patience, and a sense of adventure. Imagine how exciting it would be to bring a new family member into your home and to be able to make a positive impact on their lives. Whether a child is placed with you for 10 days, 10 months or even a few years, it will be a rollercoaster of new and exciting experiences.
5. You Want to Change a Life
Perhaps the most rewarding part of becoming a resource parent is knowing that although it may have been temporary, you have been able to touch the life of a child and change it for the better. While every foster experience is different, and some may be more difficult than others, the impact one resource parent could have is almost immeasurable. Children hold certain experiences and lessons with them for the rest of their lives, and the teaching and guidance a child could receive from you could absolutely change their lives in the long run.
So whether your New Year’s resolution is to change a life, or to be a better version of yourself, resource parenting is an amazing way to make a positive change in your life while entering the new year.
