Kids playing at the beach

Californians know that the end of summer doesn’t mean beach trips stop, and warm fall days still call for a little “vitamin sea”. We all love the beach, but it can be an anxiety-inducing place for many parents. Some beach trips include huge waves, too many people, and a million places a child could wander off to. However, with the way COVID-19 took over most of the summer, it would be no surprise if it dominated the fall as well, and the beach may be one of the safest places to take a family getaway. Whether this is your millionth family beach trip, your first-ever, or your first beach trip as a resource parent, here is our list of California’s 5 most kid-friendly beaches.

Zuma Beach
One of the most popular beaches in Malibu, Zuma has soft sand and very few rock structures or tide pools that could pose threats to your little ones.

Playa del Rey Beach
In the city of Los Angeles, Playa del Rey is a broad, peaceful sandy beach featuring volleyball courts, a paved bike path and fire pits for roasting smores.

Little Corona del Mar Beach
This beach in the San Diego area hosts a relatively large crowd of guests, but is absolutely beautiful, and is popular for having beautiful tide pools, which are perfect for you and older kids to explore together.

Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor
Baby Beach in Dana Point speaks exactly to its name. While it is more well known, the title is not misleading. This beach is perfect for smaller and younger kids. With soft sand and miniscule waves, this beach is a hit among parents for younger children.

Mission Beach
If your kids get bored of the beach relatively quickly, look no further than Mission Beach in San Diego! Mission Beach itself is often packed with tourists, but just on the sand lies Belmont Park, a small, carnival-like amusement park that will keep any rambunctious kids busy and having fun. Across the street from the ocean is Mission Bay, which has shallower waters and very few waves.

Despite the fact that everyone in California uses the beach as free therapy, it is totally okay if beach trips as parents or first-time resource parents give you a little anxiety! Going to the beach with kids can be stressful—between juggling kids, sunscreen, and keeping an eye on everyone—but hopefully one of these beaches becomes the perfect fit for you and your family. From us to you and your family, stay safe and healthy!
